Many families find that their home heating oil bill is one of their largest household expenses. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of different things that you can do in order to lower the cost of this particular bill.

1. Choose Your Windows Wisely

Double pane windows are considered to be much more energy efficient than single pane windows. Therefore, installing double pane windows in your home is an excellent way to save money on your home heating bill.

The reason for this is that because they are more energy efficient, you can lower the thermostat by a few degrees or more and still feel warm and comfortable. While having these windows installed will of course cost you money up front, it's definitely a worthwhile investment since it can save you a lot of money in the long run.

2. Turn Down The Thermostat At Bedtime

Turning the thermostat down right before you go to bed each night is a great way to reduce the cost of your home heating oil bill. Even lowering it by just a degree or two can save you a significant amount of money. If you're worried that lowering the thermostat at night might leave you feeling cold, you may want to consider investing in a nice down comforter or perhaps some flannel sheets.

Putting a hot water bottle near your feet at night is also a great way to stay warm and cozy. Using a hot water bottle is so simple. All you need to do is boil some water, pour it into the hot water bottle, and then bring it to bed with you.

3. Only Heat The Rooms You Use

Are there rooms in your house that don't get used much like a guest bedroom or a room that is used purely to store items in? If so, you should make sure to close and seal off all of the vents in those rooms. Paying to heat rooms that your family doesn't even spend time in is a complete waste of money. Closing the vents in the unused rooms will allow the hot air flow to be redirected to the rooms in your house that actually need to be heated.

There's no doubt about it that having to pay for all of the household bills can sometimes be very difficult. However, trying even just one or two of these tips should go a really long ways in helping to make your home heating oil bill much more affordable for you.
